High temperatures are used to extract refined oils. High-temperature refined oils are created by first cleaning the oil followed by grinding at very high speeds, causing a substantial amount of frictional heat, which may exceed 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit) in some cases; additionally, some solvents/chemicals are also typically involved with this process, therefore producing the end result is refined oil.

Conversely, natural oil is produced using a gradual extraction process in which no heat is generated during extraction; this extraction method retains the majority of nutrients and flavours within the final product.

Historically, the Indian terminology for “cold-pressed” oils includes: Chekku oils, Ghani oils, and Kolhu oils. Historically, the means by which oil was produced in the previous generations was through a long cylindrical device called a ‘ghani,’ through which oil was extracted from oilseeds.
